[edit] The Workshop: Better Practices for Math on the Web

During the week the participants alternated between working on web-based learning materials in mathematics and participating in presentations on tools and discussions of issues. A summary of the workshop activities is presented here. For more details see the wiki Better Practices for Math on the Web.

Troy Henderson demonstrated the use of MetaPost graphics and his PDF to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) converter.

Kyle Siegrist, the MAA’s representative on the W3C’s Task Force on MathML, reviewed the status of MathML and, more generally, XHTML, the use and advantages of cascading style sheets, and new math tools in Word 2007.

Bob Palais discussed and demonstrated 3-D graphics including a tour of the [1] Virtual Math Museum]. Doug Ensley and Barbara Kaskosz discussed their [http://mathdl.maa.org/mathDL/3/?pa=content&sa=viewDocument&nodeId=681 Flash Forum] and demonstrated programs written in Flash CS3.

Frank Wattenberg discussed the combination online and paper modeling materials being created at West Point as part of the MathDL: Books Online project, while David Smith discussed the calculus materials created by himself and Lang Moore as part of the same grant.

On Friday, July 20, the last day of the workshop, many participants presented before and after versions of materials created or modified during the workshop, putting into practice what they had learned during the week.
