[edit] Laptops for Two Billion Children

The goal of the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) project External link to OLPC Project is "to provide children around the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment and express themselves." Founded by Nicholas Negroponte (currently on leave from MIT), the OLPC project will tap into "children's innate capacities to learn, share, and create on their own." How will OLPC answer the challenge to solve the crisis of the inadequately educated two-billion children in the developing world?

The XO computer.

[edit] Math on the XO Web Browser

Even if a significant percentage of the two billion targeted children have the XO in hand, it makes sense to think about how our better practices apply to this new platform. Here is some preliminary information.

[edit] MathML and jsMath

The browser on XO is built on the Firefox engine External Link to OLPC wiki so it makes sense to hope that MathML will be implemented, assuming fonts can be installed. jsMath with image fonts load and display quite nicely.

[edit] SVG and Canvas

Both SVG and Canvas display quite well, however, some sites with SVG content give messages that indicate a viewer is required. The problem sites appear to involve animations and/or dynamic (e.g. draggable) images. Here is an actual screen shot of the SVG/Canvas test page on my web server. The left image is SVG, the right is the SVG image converted to Canvas.
